The Edit

October has to be my favorite month of the year. As a person who is so intrigued by the fantastical, this time of year gives me permission to lean into the eerie, strange + unexplainable. To play with that uncertain energy, embracing the mystery.

I’ve learned that many things in life can feel better if we give them space to just be and not define them. To me, the spooky season is a time when all of the rules + limitations we put on ourselves can dissolve away for a moment. It’s comforting to know that sometimes things don’t need to make sense or give you a definite answer. Plus, October gives me an excuse to watch all of my favorite witchy movies and imagine myself to be anything at all.

Design Inspiration

We just completed a full bathroom renovation that has the most gorgeous fall vibe. Benjamin Moore’s Brandon Beige - 977 - is a greenish taupe that pairs effortlessly with the other colors and textures of the room. We emphasized it here with sophisticated trim boxes.

In this space we blended together many different elements - dark wood, moody marble, chocolate shower tiles, a funky mirror, gold hardware, a warm, whimsical light fixture + the aforementioned trim boxes. Though all of these features are distinct in their own right, putting them together only amplifies their magic. The goal was understated drama with strong moments throughout. You don’t have to choose just one centerpiece, sometimes you can have it all. Don’t be afraid to combine multiple, bold elements. You never know how well each piece will complement the next.

Mind

Did you know October is also National Family History Month? Ironically, the month where we explore what it’s like to be something different than ourselves is also the month to celebrate our roots. Studies show that learning about your ancestry can boost mental health, help with emotional resilience + inspire personal growth. In a world focused so much on the newest thing and ever-changing trends, it is easy to become disconnected to ourselves and to our pasts. In my experience, the more I learn about my ancestors’ stories the more grateful I am, the more empowered I feel and the more empathetic I become to others’ challenges as well.

Understanding your past shapes not only your perspective of where you are now, but of how far you’ve come on a larger scale. We all know trauma can pass down through generations and yes, there is a chance you might discover something dark or unexpected but you may also be able to identify patterns + find clarity. Uncovering these mysteries can help you develop self compassion and allow for a deeper understanding of one’s self. No matter your story there is always an opportunity to find pride in where you came from and come out on the other side with more awareness. Your DNA can empower you, if you let it.

Currently Reading

The best-selling author of “The Help” is back with her second novel and we’re reading it this month!

Similar to her first book, this one is also a historical fiction centered around a group of fierce, unstoppable women. Taking place in Mississippi during the Great Depression, we meet our main characters Meg, Birdie + Charlie. Meg is an 11-year-old living a harsh life at an orphanage, yearning for a family, until Birdie, Charlie and the rest of the Calamity Club hatch a plan. With genuine, unforgettable characters, this story is said to tug at your heart strings while making you laugh out loud.

Good Eats

It’s easy to forget that the icon of Halloween is also a delicious vegetable perfect for roasting! Choose any squash you fancy - butternut squash, kabocha or honeynut. Peel, de-seed, cut, season + roast away. This recipe features a topping of zesty lemon yogurt sauce + pine nuts but squash is so versatile you can dress it in infinite ways. Use Indian, Greek or even Christmas spices, fresh herbs or pomegranate seeds. Think of your recipe as your own witch’s brew.

“Happy Halloween!

Until next month,”
